an older mutt that would otherwise get no chance at a family

an abused puppy rescued from a puppy mill or dog fight ring
No dogs are more abused than the ones bred in puppy mills and used for dog fighting. Sending a signal that these activities are un-American and that Americans have a duty to shut down unethical breeders and report dog fighting rings would help.

Labradoodle
We just got one this summer and they have the best personality AND they don't shed, which will be nice for the White House.

St. Bernard named "Governmental Bloat"
Seriously how does this even qualify as an issue worth discussing? Our people are out of work, losing their homes, dying in foreign wars, and suffering on a massive scale and .... we're talking about the "first puppy"? Quick someone call the National Enquirer. /wrists

Two daughters = two laps, two cuddlers, therefore Two Dogs
As pets are handled by one of the WH staff, why not a dog for each daughter? Each would have one to train and fuss over and each of the dogs would have a buddy when the family is off at school or other activities.
