A necessary component to the future growth of this nation. The focus must move from the 50s movement of moving individuals to the mass movement of people, goods and services. It is environmentally important!
I've been convinced by Brad Templeton's blog (http://www.templetons.com/brad/robocars/) that the most appropriate way is to go with a decentralized and autonomous vehicle solution - at least until someone convinces me otherwise. This would keep the US automakers going, require a moonshot-level energy grid and IT R&D project requiring capital investment into the nation.
This is a multipurpose cause, it will infuse money into the economy from the bottom up through jobs, provide a greener method of transportation for future generations, and potentially carry long term gains in the years to come.
I have been pushing for these ideas for some time an now that the economy is in a slump it is more important then ever to undertake a massive project such as this.
